Many of the children who survived the wars of the 1990s are now parents themselves. A whole new generation has grown up knowing peace rather than conflict. The images shown on television during the 1990s told only one chapter of the region’s story. Today you will discover bustling cities… Beautiful coastlines… Ancient monasteries… Ottoman bridges… Roman ruins… Medieval castles… Snow-covered mountains… Crystal-clear lakes… And some of the warmest hospitality in Europe. The Balkans is far more than its wars. It always has been. ⸻ The countries that once formed Yugoslavia now follow their own paths. Slovenia became the first to join both the European Union and NATO. Its economy has grown steadily, and its picturesque towns attract visitors from around the world. Croatia rebuilt after the war and later joined the European Union. Its Adriatic coastline, historic cities and islands have become among Europe’s most popular holiday destinations. Montenegro, one of Europe’s youngest independent nations, has embraced tourism while continuing its journey towards closer integration with Europe. North Macedonia has worked to strengthen its democracy and resolve long-standing disputes with its neighbours, opening new opportunities for its future.
