Opening Thought! “Some places witness history. The Balkans created it.” Imagine standing on a mountain at the first light of dawn. Below you, rivers wind through green valleys. Ancient forests stretch towards distant hills, while beyond them the blue waters of the Adriatic shimmer beneath the rising sun. Stone villages cling to hillsides much as they have for centuries. It is peaceful. Timeless. Beautiful. Yet beneath this remarkable landscape lies one of the most extraordinary stories in human history. This is the Balkans. A region that many people know only because of the wars of the twentieth century. But those wars were not the beginning of the story. They were the final chapters of one that had been unfolding for more than two thousand years. To understand why Yugoslavia was created… why it eventually collapsed… and why neighbours who had lived side by side could one day find themselves on opposite sides of a battlefield… we must begin much further back. Long before nations. Long before borders. Long before anyone imagined countries called Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia or Slovenia. We begin with the land itself. For geography has always shaped destiny. Stretching between Central Europe and the eastern Mediterranean, the Balkans occupy one of the most important crossroads on Earth. To the west lie the great plains and kingdoms of Europe. To the east, the ancient routes leading towards Anatolia, the Middle East and Asia. To the south, the Mediterranean opens the door to Africa and the wider world. Whoever controlled these mountains, rivers and coastlines controlled some of the most important routes between continents. That simple fact would shape the lives of countless generations. Yet for the people who first settled here, such grand ideas meant nothing. Thousands of years ago, long before history was written down, families searched these valleys for safety, fresh water and fertile land. They built simple homes from timber, stone and clay. They hunted in the forests, fished the rivers and slowly learned to cultivate the rich soil beneath their feet. Life was hard. The seasons determined everything. Spring brought hope. Summer demanded long days of work beneath the sun. Autumn filled barns for the coming winter. Winter tested every family that called these mountains home. The land could be generous. But it demanded respect. Generation after generation learned that survival depended not upon kings or armies, but upon neighbours helping one another through difficult times. Long before kingdoms existed, communities already understood something that history would repeatedly forget. People survive together. They rarely survive alone. As centuries passed, those quiet farming communities became connected to a much larger world. Travellers began arriving from distant lands. Merchants carried salt, metals, pottery, olive oil and wine across mountain passes that would later become famous roads. With them came new ideas. New languages. New beliefs. The Balkans slowly became a meeting place where cultures encountered one another, exchanged knowledge and, at times, competed for influence. Some arrived seeking trade. Others arrived seeking power. The first great maritime civilisation to leave its mark came from across the sea. Greek sailors established colonies along parts of the Adriatic coast. Their ships connected the region to a thriving Mediterranean world. They brought architecture, philosophy, mathematics and commerce. Coastal settlements grew into bustling ports where goods, stories and traditions travelled as freely as the waves themselves. The Balkans were no longer isolated. They had become part of a growing network that linked Europe, Asia and Africa. But an even greater power was approaching.
